Our proposal for the Memorial of the Missing in Limassol reimagines commemoration as a shared civic and spatial experience—merging monument and park into a unified landscape of remembrance, reflection, and everyday life. The design, a joint competition entry with architect Antonis Stylianou, introduces a linear sculptural element composed of tall, exposed concrete walls arranged in a rhythmic sequence. These monumental surfaces act as both spatial thresholds and symbolic barriers, mediating between the busy urban surroundings and the quiet garden space within. Along the western edge, weathered corten steel panels—laser-cut in a symbolic motif—enrich the surfaces with depth, texture, and meaning, while alluding to the passage of time and the persistence of memory. Behind this sculptural screen, a calm public space unfolds: a park designed for rest, gathering, and play, allowing families and visitors to experience the monument as part of daily life rather than apart from it. The landscape design retains and reinforces the existing greenery, integrating new planting zones, seating, and shaded areas to form a neighborhood oasis protected from traffic and noise. The proposal embraces contrast—between solid and void, exposure and concealment, collective memory and personal presence—offering visitors a journey through spaces of solemnity and lightness. With minimal maintenance requirements and materials drawn from the Cypriot context, the memorial aims to endure as a meaningful place of tribute and connection for future generations.
