Our proposal for Zouhouri Square reimagines a forgotten urban void as a vibrant civic landmark in the heart of Larnaca. Once a multicultural node shaped by Ottoman, Cypriot, and commercial histories, the site now sits underused and disconnected. Our design seeks to revive its spatial memory, layering heritage, urban life, and contemporary needs into a cohesive public realm. The intervention is structured around two inclined green surfaces that define new spatial rhythms—framing views of the historic Zouhouri Mosque, offering shade, and generating topographic interest within the flat square. These geometries form an open amphitheatre and a covered café pavilion, allowing for seasonal and daily flexibility in use. Central to the scheme is a sunken plaza with programmable water jets, inviting play and interaction while subtly cooling the space during summer months. Inspired by the surrounding textures and scales, the materials palette is modest yet expressive: warm stone paving, corten steel, native plantings, and reversible steel structures that respect the heritage context while signaling a contemporary civic renewal. The proposal activates a dense sequence of micro-public spaces—play areas, rest zones, gathering spots, and cultural installations—woven together by generous paths and shaded green pockets. The design not only restores Zouhouri Square as a key urban destination but also transforms it into a green cultural corridor between Ermou Street and the Old Market district.
